Blake School, 511 Kenwood Parkway, Minneapolis, MN
- Doug Litle directs the Twin Cities Jazz Workshop. Online enrollment and complete program information availalbe at www.tcjazzworkshop.com. Become a Facebook Fan of the program.
Now in its 16th year, the Twin Cities Jazz Workshop is one of the most established summer music programs in the metro area. Students play their instruments as part of small jazz combos that meet for three hours each day over the course of a one-week session. They receive instruction from a top-notch faculty of jazz professionals whose credits include international tours, numerous CDs, and several major awards. Each workshop session concludes with a Saturday afternoon student concert and live recording at Minnesota’s premier jazz venue, The Dakota Jazz Club on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis.
. . While being tuned into the fundamentals of the jazz tradition, workshop attendees learn a repertoire that ranges from swing classics to Latin jazz. Importantly, the workshop strives to create a setting that is not only informative, but also both inspiring and fun. Students learn a lot and laugh a lot. Besides improving their own musical skills as individuals, they also meet other young jazz musicians and have a great opportunity to make new friends and connections- many young jazz groups have been formed by students who first met playing in a combo at the workshop.
. . Since 1996, hundreds of aspiring musicians have studied at the jazz workshop. In anonymous student surveys taken over ten years, 98% of past workshop students said they would recommend the program to a friend. The Workshop has received support from numerous organizations including The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, The Minneapolis Arts Commission, The Dakota Jazz Club Education Foundation, and The McKnight Foundation.
